This workshop offers two topics for educational leaders of all backgrounds with an opportunity to listen, learn, and engage with others as both social justice and equity issues are examined in the same workshop. Transforming School Culture and Climate Through Effective Classroom Management Strategies! Participants will be exposed to strategies teachers can use to engage misbehavior and immediately disengage. These moments of engaging and disengaging support the research of understanding the environments at-risk students come to between the hours of 8 am – 3 pm each school day needs to be different than the environments kids come from. Additionally, participants will be exposed to a new narrative of addressing student behavior regarding the constructs of a Before, During, and After ideology that administrators should consider when conducting a panoramic view scape of their current behavioral management system.
Presented by: Johnny Alvarado, Ed.D., Educational Consultant Dr. Johnny Alvarado is an alumnus of California State University, Fresno, where he has earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration (Accountancy), a Masters of Arts Degree in Education, and a Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership.
Dr. Alvarado has taught in three different school districts with experiences that span from elementary through secondary settings. Additionally, he has served as an assistant principal and principal in elementary, intermediate, and secondary education, and currently serves as Director of Charter Schools for the Fresno County Office of Education.
As an educational consultant, Dr. Alvarado trains educators on classroom management, lesson planning, dealing with at-risk students, and teacher leader programs. He has conducted training seminars throughout the U.S. and in Canada for schools desiring to change how they approach student discipline and garner back the hours of lost time dealing with misbehaving students.
Dr. Alvarado brings confidence, laughter, and best of all, practical solutions to his fellow teachers.
Valuing Diversity and Beyond… This presentation will introduce a definition of “Diversity,” travel the journey through “Unconscious Bias,” meet at “Inclusion,” hold a conversation about “Equity,” and challenge individual, group, and systems thinking regarding “Structural Racism.” The question then becomes…”and so what do you intend to do now?”
Presented by: Kenneth Magdaleno, Ed.D., Executive Director of CLEAR and Director of Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership Dr. Kenneth R. Magdaleno serves as Director of the Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership at California State University, Fresno in addition to serving as Co-Director of the Collaborative Online Doctorate in Educational Leadership (CODEL) at CSU Channel Islands and CSU Fresno. He is also the Director and Developer of the Fresno State Mentoring Institute currently serving staff and faculty at the university. Dr. Magdaleno earned his doctorate in Educational Leadership from UCLA and is the founding Executive Director of the Center for Leadership, Equity, and Research (CLEAR). Dr. Magdaleno regularly presents at Equity Institutes and conferences where he addresses issues of “Diversity and Beyond.” His published works include Educational Leaders and the Acknowledgement Gap and Mentoring Latina and Latino Leaders in Keeping and Improving Tomorrow’s School Leaders. His primary research interests are areas of social justice, leadership mentoring, critical race theory and developing educational leaders of color.
